Here are some common questions.
At 16 years old, you can apply for a code 1 learners licence, allowing you to drive:
- a motorcycle with a maximum engine capacity of 125 cc
- a moped with pedals for assistance
If you hold a code 1 learners licence and are 18 or older, you can ride any motorcycle.
At 17, you can obtain a code 2 learners licence to drive any vehicle except:
- motorcycles
- vehicles over 3,500 kg tare
- buses or goods vehicles over 3,500 kg gross mass
- articulated vehicles over 3,500 kg gross combination mass
At 18, you may apply for a code 3 learners licence for any vehicle except motorcycles.
With a learners licence, you must be accompanied by a licensed driver, except for motorcycles, where you cannot carry passengers.
To apply for a learners licence, visit a driving licence testing centre with:
- a completed form LL1
- two identical photographs of yourself
You can schedule a test appointment in advance, but you must be of age on the test date. The test is a written assessment of road rules and vehicle controls.
If you pass, you’ll pay a fee to receive your learners licence certificate. This licence must be valid on the date of your driving test, and it remains valid unless cancelled by a court. You can retake the practical test within the licence's validity period if needed.
Before you can apply for a driving licence, you need to have a learners licence. You must be at least 18 years old for a motor vehicle licence and 16 for a motorcycle licence (up to 125 cc). To apply, complete form DL1 and submit it with:
Your ID document Any existing driving licences two identical black and white photos or colour photos with the required fee
Your fingerprints will be taken, and you will undergo an eye test. After processing, the driving licence testing centre will schedule your driving test based on the K53 standard. You will be assessed on your knowledge of road signs, rules, and driving signals. If you pass, you will receive a temporary licence until your official one is ready. You will be notified by mail when to collect it, and you must bring your ID. Licences not picked up within 120 days will be destroyed.
A Professional Driving Permit (PrDP) is required to drive public transport and heavy vehicles like taxis and buses, but not for hearses or tractors.
Formerly known as a Public Drivers Permit (PDP), a PrDP is necessary for:
• Goods vehicles over 3,500 kg
• Breakdown vehicles
• Buses and minibuses (over 3,500 kg) for 12+ passengers
• Vehicles for hire transporting people
To obtain a PrDP, you must:
• Have a valid driver’s licence
• Meet age and medical fitness requirements
• Be certified by an approved training body (if needed)
• Have no serious driving convictions
To apply, provide:
• Your ID
• 2 ID-sized photos
• Your driver’s licence
• A police clearance certificate.
